Farm Introduction and Description
Vision & Additional Story
Burumani was established in 1979 in Nyeri county, the farm sits 1600m above sea level. The estate has grown from 500 bushes to over 3,000 bushes that are farmed organically. Majority of the coffee trees are SL 28 with a few Ruiru 11 and Batian varieties.
Nyeri County in Kenya is ideal for coffee farming due to its cool, wet climate (13°C-26°C), fertile volcanic soils, and high altitude (1,500-2,200m). These factors contribute to slow bean maturation, resulting in high-quality Arabica coffee with bright acidity and complex flavors. The region’s handpicking and washed processing methods enhance coffee quality, while sustainability practices like agroforestry, organic farming, water conservation, and soil preservation ensure long-term productivity and reinforcement of its reputation as a top specialty coffee producer.
In the Early 1950s the parents of the proprietors of Burumani had about 15 stems of SL variety which was for own consumption and some little retailing. In the 1960s they transitioned to commercial farming and it is there where the proprietors of Burumani got their hands on experience as they assisted with weeding and berry picking.
At inception Burumani planted 540 SL 28 and in 2001 they acquired another farm with mature 1,200 stems of SL 28. Around 2010/11 we started top-working our stems with Ruiru 11 scions. Up until 2018 our stems were literally Ruiru 11 when we reverted to SL. In 2017, we planted another 1,185 stems of Ruiru II and in the same year started to farm organically till to date. We have commenced plans to seek certification for organic farming in 2025.
Through the existence of the farm, we have marketed our crop through the co-operative but in 2022 we moved into value addition under the name BURUMANI and in October of the same year. Burumani received its first Pulping station license and eventually received Grower Code AG 0346. In 2024 Burumani installed a sun dryer to support the Natural processing of the coffee beans which is more economical, has improved precision and is environmentally friendly.
The cherry harvest of the year 2022/23 was about 11,000kg and our latest harvest was more than 15,000kg.
Burumani day-to-day farming activities are run by Mr and Mrs Gikonyo (the proprietors) with the assistance of their son that assists in identifying market for their crop.
